Romanian engineer

When she joint as student at the famous Polytechnic School in Berlin - Charlottenburg, Germany, in 1909 (that time the National School of Bridges and Highways in Bucharest did not get girls), Eliza Leonida was the first woman walked in amphitheatres in superior technical institute. Many teachers were suspicious, believing that engineering profession was only for men. But young Leonidas Eliza (engineer Dimitrie Leonida’s sister) - born on November 10, 1887, in Galati - worked hard, conquered prejudice, and in 1912 received her degree in engineering, metallurgy-chemistry specialty "with distinction". Thus she became the first female engineer not only in Romania, but also in Europe.
The career of this unquestionable pioneer of our numerous female engineers today, was rich, especially in the exploitation of the Romanian mineral resources. Leonida-Zamfirescu Elisa worked as a researcher, for half a century (1912-1963), the Geological Institute of Romania, later Geological Committee. She prewieved the production of copper sulphate in the country (used to destroy harmful fungi on cultivated plants) and developed an effective method of manufacturing this substance, starting from the ore existing in the country. She also studied mineral waters in Romania, also, the composition of water for industrial consumption. She died on November 25, 1973, the venerable age of 86 years, with the sense of a debt fully met, the state awarded it the highest orders and medals for her merits.
