UPB is the oldest technical university in Romania
POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest (UPB) is the oldest and most prestigious technical university in Romania. Its traditions are connected to the founding in 1818 of the first higher technical school taught in Romanian language at Saint Sava Abbey of Bucharest, by Gheorghe Lazar. It is reorganized in 1832 in College of Saint Sava.
At first October 1864 it was set up the “School of Bridges, Mines and Architecture”, which, on the thirtieth of October 1867 become the “School of Bridges, Roads and Mines” with five years courses. Starting with 1881, under the leadership of Gheorghe Duca the school will have a new structure and receives the name “National School of Bridges and Roads”.
On this basis, in June 1920 the Polytechnic School of Bucharest was founded, with four sections: Electromechanics, Civil Engineering, Mine and Metallurgy, Industrial Section.
Starting to November 1920 the name of the school will be POLITEHNICA of Bucharest.
On August 3rd, 1948 the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest was founded comprising in the beginning four faculties.
In November 1992, in accordance with the resolution of the Senate, The Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest turned into the POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest.
At present, the POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest is formed by 15 different faculties (Electrical Engineering; Power Engineering; Automatic Control and Computer Science; Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology; Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics; Engineering and Management of Technological Systems; Biotechnical Systems Engineering; Transports; Aerospace Engineering; Material Science and Engineering; Applied Chemistry and Materials Science; Engineering in Foreign Languages; Applied Sciences; Medical Engineering; Entrepreneurship, Business Engineering and Management) and 40 research centers.
