Italian engineer and politician, founder of the Pirelli company.

Giovanni Battista Pirelli was born in Varenna (Milan) on December 27, 1848. Son of a baker, would be the eighth of 10 children, five of whom would die in infancy. After starting his studies at the University of Pavia, which will be interrupted by his involvement as a volunteer on the Garibaldi’s side of Italian unification wars, he graduated as an industrial engineer in 1870, earning a scholarship as the best student of the course. After traveling around Europe knowing its incipient industry, he returned to Milan and founded "G. B. Pirelli & Co. ", which will specialize in the manufacture of technical components of vulcanized rubber: rubber fabric, belts, hoses, etc. In 1879 Pirelli began the manufacture of electrical cables for lighting and telegraphy. Later, in 1885, it began production of rubber strips for carriage wheels, and in 1890 it would start the activity that would make famous: the manufacture of tires. Since then the company has continued to grow, diversify and expand its activities to other countries, starting its listing on the Milan stock exchange in 1922.
Parallel to his activities as an industrial entrepreneur, Giovanni Battista Pirelli developed a political career that led him to be named Senator of the Kingdom of Italy in 1909, and to assume the office of President of the General Confederation of Italian Industry in 1919. Giovanni Battista Pirelli died in Milan on October 20, 1932.
