Juan Jose Lerena y Barry was a Spanish sailor born in Cádiz, Spain in 1796. He made several journeys between Spain and America and he patented

Juan Jose Lerena y Barry was a Spanish sailor born in Cádiz, Spain in 1796. He made several naval expeditions to America visiting countries such as Venezuela (1817) and Peru. He returned to Spain in 1821 but in 1823 he is forced to exile in Nueva York, Spain after the Cádiz defense. In 1825 he published in USA a Spanish teaching manual. He founded El Redactor , a Spanish newspaper in New York in 1826. He also patented an optical telegraph and it was used by the year 1829 by the Spanish navy. He died in Madrid in 1866.
