University of Galaţi, "Lower Danube University". (1948 - )

In the university there are ten doctoral schools for approximately 500 PhD students, under the guidance of 75 doctoral scientific leaders.

In autumn 1948, in Galaţi was established the Faculty of Land Improvement - the first in the country with this profile. In the years 1951, 1955 and 1959 there have been created new faculties, which were included in Agronomic, Polytechnic and Pedagogical Institute.
In the Institutes of Galati were prepared engineering staff for six areas of national interest - unique until 1990, in Romanian higher education: Improving Land, Land Measurement, Construction and Marine Transport, Food Industries, Fisheries and Fisheries Technology, Refrigeration techniques. The curricula, courses and reference materials were entirely conceived by the institute’s professors of Galaţi.
By the Decree of the RSR no. 105 / 03.20.1974, Pedagogical and Polytechnics Institutes were merged into the University of Galaţi, school renamed in 1991 "Lower Danube University".
Today, "Lower Danube University" has 16 colleges, educating approx. 18,000 students in 46 specializations, in full time, distance and short term form of education.
University organizes master postgraduate courses with the duration of 1-2 years for university graduates and master studies lasting two years for graduates of first cycle of studies, according to Law 288/2004, and the universities long-term graduation, according to Law 84/1995.
