Terradas i Illa, Esteve (1883 - 1950)

Spanish mathematician, physicist and engineer.

After studying simultaneously mechanics, engineering, astronomy and physics at the University of Barcelona, he obtained a PhD in Physics and Mathematics in 1905 at the University of Madrid. A year later he began working as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Madrid, but he left this post in order to go to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Zaragoza. In 1907 he moved to Barcelona after obtaining the post of Professor of Optics and Acoustics. Thereafter, he was one of the main drivers of the Spanish scientific research of the time. Around 1915, the Community of Catalonia entrusted him to direct the layout of the regional telephone network. From 1923 he combined his research in the field of physics with the management of works for the Railway Network of the Community of Catalonia and for the construction of the Metropolitan Railway of Barcelona. Between 1927 and 1931, he was director of the National Telephone Company of Spain. During the Civil War (1936-1939), he was exiled to Argentina, where he taught at the Universities of Buenos Aires and Río de la Plata and he assisted in the development of hydrographic surveys. In 1941, he returned to Spain and joined the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC).
During his academic career he wrote several works, among which are notable " Emisión de radiaciones por cuerpos fijos o en movimiento " read at the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona in 1909, "Els discrets elements of matter i of radiations" being one of the first works devoted to particle physics written in Catalan or "Corrientes marinas" written in 1941 in Argentina.
