VIDIE, Lucien (1805 - 1886)

French mécanicien and inventor.

Lucien Vidie went to school to become a lawyer at first but had a great interest in the workings of steam engines. This burgeoning interest soon led to that of barometers, the device that measures air pressure. Most common barometers were made using mercury; however, Lucien Vidie created a aneroid or "fluidless" barometer in 1843. This type of barometer was made with a spring that changed the height of the seal, which made the instrument much easier to construct and carry. Vidie's invention did not hold well in the French market and he went to England to sell it. However, his patent became embroiled in many legal disputes due to other inventors creating similar models.
