Propulsion specialist, he played an important part in the history of the automobile.
He is considered as the father of the combustion engine. He had experienced mechanical creations mainly on boats, the applications concerned not only the naval engine, but also the automotive and aviation. He is also the inventor of the tangent spoked wheel, even though he never had any benefit from this invention. After an apprenticeship as a mechanic at Thiers (Puy-de-Dôme), he moved to Paris in 1874. He quickly became an independent inventor living with the rights of its patents. 135 of 156 the 1901's Paris Motor Show exhibitors had the Forest's license. He was decorated with the French Legion of Honour in 1912. He died accidentally at the age of 62 at the motor boats meeting in Monaco, where he had one of his models. He is buried at Suresnes.
