Point C of gear 2 describes a hypocycloid whose shape depends on the ratio of the radii of gears 2 and 3. Connecting rod 4 is connected by turning pairs C and D to gear 2 and to slider 5 which moves along fixed guides a-a. When crank 1 rotates about axis A, gear 2 rolls around in gear 3, reciprocating slider 5 through connecting rod 4.
