He was an engineer and mathematician born in 1713. He made important works on navigation and astronomy for the Spanish Navy.
Jorge Juan y Santacilia was born in Alicante, Spain on January 5th in 1713. He studied grammaticism and Language but in 1729 he decided to study at the Naval School of Cádiz. He graduated in 1734. That same year he enrolled with some French scientists into an expedition to measure a meridian in Perú. From 1736 to 1744 the expedition worked on the meridian measure, including Jorge Juan Santacilia. In 1744 he enrolled to back to Europe and arrived in 1745 to share his findings. Later on, he participated in several naval expeditions and missions. He died in Madrid on June 21st in 1773.
