Scientist, Philosopher
Thales of Miletus is considered the first philosopher of the Western history. He founded the Ionic School that anticipated the out-and-out scientific research; for this reason he can be considered the precursor of the study of all the sciences. He studied, in fact, quite all the knowledge investigating in a “modern” way, that is to say trying to understand the “phisical” explanations of the phenomena. None of his treatises reached us, but we know his work by the mentions by later scientists. It is told that Thales was the first to investigate on electricity: he sayd that the magnet was alive because it was able to move things and that it had a soul.
It is also ascrined to him the demonstration of the theorem of Thales. For this reason Thales was claimed as the founder of the deductive approach of the geometry.
