Savino, Domenico Fortunato (1808 - 1890)


 
Engineer of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies

Domenico Fortunato Savino was an engineer of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. His work in the field of the mechanics was of great importance for the Kingdom. He worked at the steel mill of Mongiana in Calabria, the biggest steel mill in Italy at those times. He firrst worked at the architectural restoration of the factory; then he actively worked at the production processes introducing new methods (one of them for the first time in the world), new open hearth furnaces and new rolling mills. Designed and made evolutions of the foreign-made equipments and finally obtained that all the tools and the production equipments were designed and made in homeland.
He was also the founder of the Royal Firearms Factory of Mongiana.

1840 He starts working at the Mongiana Iron Works
1842 Restructures some parts of the iron works
1846 Inroduces a new method for the steel production
1848 Introduces new open hearth furnaces and new rolling mills
1852 Founds the Royal Firearms Factory of Mongiana
1853 He modifies the existing machines and obtains that all the tools and machines are designed and built in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies
