Pump with a vertical spindle electrically driven
Pumpe mit elektrisch angetriebener Vertikalspindel

Click to enlargeClick to enlarge Description

This picture shows a pump with a vertical spindle electrically driven. It shows a case where the pump is placed at the bottom of a dry well on a suitable foundation. The water may be in a separate well at a lower level, or in a separate chamber at the same or lower level. The pump is of the double-inlet type with its cover on the top, the first coupling being of muff type, and by taking this off and removing the lowest length of vertical shaft, the cover and its bearing can be raised and the disc drawn out.
The top of the vertical shaft is fitted with a special coupling secured by a taper and nut, the whole of the weight of shafting and pump disc hang on this coupling, the boss of which is supported by a ball bearing carried on a baseplate. Thus no weight comes on the motor.
The connection of the motor coupling to the vertical shaft coupling is by sliding pins.
The weight of the motor armature is carried by a ball bearing at the top of the motor.
This makes an excellent arrangement.
At one side of the shaft is shown an air ejector for charging the pump at starting, or for taking out any air which may collect in the pump during working.
The ejector may be operated by steam from any convenient source, or by water under a pressure of 30 feet or over.
