Pump with a vertical spindle electrically driven
Pumpe mit elektrisch getriebener Vertikalspindel

Click to enlargeClick to enlarge Description

This picture shows a pump with a vertical spindle electrically driven. It is a plan adopted when the water rises and falls in the well. The pump is of single-inlet type, and is wholly immersed in the water, being placed at such a point that it is always below the lowest water level. Between the
pump and the base-plate at the top of the well which carries the motor are lengths of cast-iron pipe, so that the whole weight of the pump and pipes hangs from the base-plate. The spindle runs up through the centre of the pipes, the lengths being connected by muff couplings. The water is thus excluded from contact with the spindle. Just next to the pump is a short piece of pipe in halyes to give access to the gland when required.
Intermediate bearings, consisting of gun-metal bushes adjusted and held by set screws, are provided as required. The oiling of these is done by long pipes from an oil box at the top.
