Augustin Normand (1792-1871) has two son, one is named Benjamin (1830-1888). This is the eldest son and was the true creator of the compound engine, which he applied in 1860 to the Furet. As for Jacques Augustin (1839-1906) his second son, he studied the shapes of ships, those destroyers, which over a hundred were delivered to the national Navy. He also created a type of water boiler tube widespread. In 1817, the Normands family settled in Le Havre. The Normand sites is in the application and development of the propeller, played, at least in France, a role of primary importance. They were the authors of the first ship propeller The Corsica (formerly Napoleon), which was a resounding success. In 1841, the propeller propulsion wood is the work of Frédéric Sauvage, French inventor and scientist. He realized this project to support his studies and experiences on the development of a device intended to replace the wheels of steamships. He joined the shipbuilder Augustin Normand for his research and apply this invention to a new ship.
Unfortunately, the entire spiral propeller of Sauvage wasting the power of the machine. Norman has had the idea of splitting into three branches. The operation was a complete success, but Sauvage would never recognize this improvement. Frédéric Sauvage protest to assert the primacy of his discovery to the Académie des Sciences and a report by Mr Séguier give him the right. Frédéric Sauvage, by patent, is acknowledged inventor of the helix spiral applied to the propulsion of steam boats.
