Guldino, Paolo (1577 - 1643)

Paul Guldino was a Swiss professor of Mathematics and Astronomer. He discovered the Guldinus theorem to determine the surface and the volume of a solid of revolution. This theorem is also known as the Pappus-Galdinus theorem, attributed to Pappus of Alexandria. He was a personality of reference in his time because of a recognized reputation of his works that still today are considered of fundamental importance in Mathematics Mathematics, Astronomy, Mechanics

1597 He converted to Catholicism and entered the Jesuit order, changing his name from Habakkuk to Paul
1609 He was sent to Rome by the Jesuit order for further education to study at the Collegio romano
1623 He became a professor of Mathematics at the University of Vien
1629 He was posted to Sagan to the Jesuit gymnasium established by Wallenstein
1637 He returned to Graz, where he died in 1643
