Helmholtz, Hermann/von (1821 - 1894)
Dt. Naturwissenschaftler, Physiker und Physiologe
Helmholtz initially studied medicine and became professor for pathology and physiology in Königsberg before he undertook the professorship for physics in Berlin.
Helmholtz could verify that nerve fibres have their origin in ganglion cells. In thermodynamics he introduced the term of free energy. Also in hydrodynamics he established an important basis by formulating the vortex laws.
