Link 4 is connected by turning pair H to rocker arm 5 which turns about fixed axis K.• Suspended by turning pair L from rocker arm 5 is hold-down 6 which turns freely about axis L. When crank 1 rotates counterclockwise, ram 2 with upper knife a travel downward. Hold-down 6 also travels downward. Ram travel ceases when the hold-down reaches knife a. The stock is sheared by raising lower knife b upon further rotation of crank 1. The mechanism for raising the lower knife is not shown.
