The nearly five decades of ALMA MATER SUCEVENSIS, with difficulties and adversities, establishments and dissolutions, with short term or durable victories, resulted in University prestige that it has today. The University’s people mean that the future is equally new opportunities and challenges. Promoting honest work, diligent and responsible, the University aims to provide the local community and contemporary society in general knowledge, skills and human resources value
The History of Higher Education in Suceava began with the creation, in 1963, of the Pedagogical Institute for 3 years. Since that year significant changes were related to the educational system in Romania, favored by stopping the process of Sovietization of the Romanian society and the return to national educational traditions. Establishment of higher education in Suceava meant for Bukovina County, a natural consequence of efforts to perpetuate and enrich the cultural and educational traditions formed over time by royal schools in Northern Moldavia, the Academy of Putna, Theological Institute and University of Cernăuţi (now in Moldavia Country). Depending on the type of organization, content, structure, objectives, purpose, mission, we can distinguish four steps taken by the institution of higher education in Suceava in the nearly five decades of existence:
1963 -1975: Pedagogical Institute stage
1976 -1984: Stage of Higher Education, Pedagogical and Technical Joint Institute
1984 -1989: Engineering Institute stage
from 1990 to present: Stage University "Stefan cel Mare" Suceava (USV).
Analysis and description of each of the four stages highlights the complex and tortuous policy of university education in Romania and highlights how Suceava University has become a modern prestigious Romanian university space. Dynamism and importance of the University "Stefan cel Mare" were confirmed by the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education which, after foreign institutional assessments, awarded in September 2008, a "high trust", the most valuable qualification that may receive an University of the national education system.

Since 2007, in USV heritage came, by government decision, an area of 30 ha, situated 3 km from the current campus, which now occupies 6 hectares. Here will be located Campus 2, with construction objectives as: students' home culture, Sport Hall with 4500 seats, Olympic swimming pool, facilities for the Faculty of Forestry Education, Physical Education and Sport, sport training places, lake, arboretum, botanical garden, greenhouse complex, research centers in nanotechnology and biotechnology, restoration center and university museum, central University Library, 5 hostels with a total capacity of 1,500 seats and a student restaurant.
All material investments aimed creating an environment to facilitate and stimulate education and research. University is willing to become an increasingly more active element in community life and local reference center for European higher education.
