Bellavitis, Giusto (1803 - 1880)

University Professor; Analytic Geometry and Algebra

As born from an aristocratic family he studied mathematics by himself. Without having any university degree he became Full professor of Analytic Geometry and Algebra at University of Padova (1845-1880). He published about 200 works.
Biusto Bellavitis’ main contributions can be seen in his method of equivalences, some studies on complex numbers, his work on numerical solutions of geometric equations.
Moreover, he gave an important contribution to algebraic geometry by completing the classification of cubic curves started by Newton and working on the theory of numbers.
He criticized the non-Euclidean geometries.
