MARINONI, Hippolyte Auguste (1823 - 1904)

French manufacturer of printing machines, especially the stereo rotary plate, and media owner of « Le Petit Journal ».

He is considered as the one of the founders of the modern press. He is of Italian origin by his father, Ange-Joseph Marinoni, who was from Brescia : old dragon of the Napoleonic armies, he became sergeant of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Paris, and he died in 1830. Hippolyte Auguste Marinoni starts at the bottom, as an apprentice. In 1838, he joined the machine manufacturer typographical Pierre-Alexandre Gaveaux. Marinoni started his own manufacturing company in 1847 and develops, among other, a lithographic machine. In 1872, he provides to « La Liberté » newspaper the first french rotating press, then he installs five to the Petit Journal. In 1882, succeeding Emile de Girardin, he became the head of the Petit Journal, which he made a reference newspaper, adding to his inventor and mecanical qualities a real press leadership. He foresaw the importance of the color in 1889, and produced a rotating colors. It launches the illustrated journal « Le Petit Journal », that appears on the first page accidents, crimes and tragedies, inaugurating the tabloids. Friend of Étienne Lenoir, he helped him achieving his gas engine (1860). The Marinoni company continues its activities. In 1921, it merged with Voirin workshops located in Montataire (Oise). In 1963, it joined the American Harris Graphics group, acquired in 1986 by AM International, then by the Heidelberg Group. It now belongs to the GOSS International group.
