French engineer and physicist who designed steam locomotives and worked on the theory of heat.
Clapeyron graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris in 1818. From 1820 to 1830 he worked in St. Petersburg at the Institute of Railroad Engineers. He teaches mathematics and make suspension bridges. Returning to France, he built the first French railway between Paris and Saint-Germain in 1835. In 1836 he joined the "Compagnie du Chemin de Fer de Paris Saint-Germain" of the Pereire brothers and participate to the study of the railway passenger traffic "Paris-Le Pecq", with Flachat, Lamé and Mony, all Saint-Simonians. From 1837 he worked in the railway projects in northern France, and from 1852 to the execution of the lines of the South. He is making progress in calculation of beams and arches of bridges, through considerations of the elasticity. It is also the author of progress of steam locomotives, with a trigger mechanism of steam. He built the bridge of Asnieres and a bridge across the Garonne. Professor at ENPC in 1844, he finished his career as chief engineer. He was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1858. He is interested in the work of Sadi Carnot in modern thermodynamics, and gave his name to the Clapeyron equation, "driving force of heat."
