CAIL, Jean-François (1804 - 1871)

French entrepreneur and industrialist who was a key figure in french industrialization.

Jean-François Cail was a key figure in French industrialization. He started his career in 1824 as a factory worker at Derosne Inc. making machinery for the sugar industry. The firm expanded and was renamed Derosne-Cail in 1832. It manufactured a variety of industrial machines. In 1848 Mr. Cail licensed the patents of Thomas Russell Crampton and began manufacturing Crampton locomotives as well. Having become a wealthy man, Mr. Cail built a luxurious townhouse in Paris that is used today by the city government. A street in Paris is also named after him, Rue Cail. Additionally, his name is among in the 72 names engraved on the Eiffel Tower by Gustave Eiffel, in recognition of his contributions to the project.

1814 - 1816 Invention d'une râpe en tôle pour réduire la pomme de terre à l’état de farine, tubercule d’un usage encore nouveau, dont on cherchait les multiples possibilités.
1816 - 1819 Chef-Boutonne, France Apprenti chaudronnier.
1824 Ouvrier chaudronnier, contremaître puis chef d’atelier chez Derosne.
1832 Associé de Derosne.
1844 Construction des locomotives par la maison Cail dont les célèbres locomotives de vitesse Crampton, qui plus tard furent surnommées les TGV du XIXe siècle, car elles roulaient à 120 km/h, dès 1862.
1846 Directeur du Cabinet Derosne-Cail.
