Irish mathematician and astronomer
Ball machte sich um die wissenschaftliche Behandlung der Schraube verdient. Er stellte sie auf die gleiche Stufe wie der Punkt, die Ebene und die Linie. Neben der Mechanik beschäftigte er sich mit Astronomie und Mathematik. Er hielt allein zwischen 1874 und 1884 über 700 öffentliche nichtakademische Vorträge zu verschiedenen Themen. Seine Vorträge über Astronomie waren so berühmt, dass er dafür sogar geadelt wurde. Auf ihn geht die Definition des Undulationspunktes (auch als Ballscher Punkt bezeichnet) zurück.
