Universal Screw-Wrench according to Schwartzkopf (1862)

Struttura del meccanismo

Funzione The Berliner mechanical and locomotive engineer Schwartzkopff invented a universal wrench in 1862, the jaws of which adapting themselves to the screw or nut size.
The greater the force applied when tightening or loosening the screw connection, the more firmly press the jaws on the screw head and prevent it from slipping.
In contrast to other adjustable wrenches, where it often comes from too much backlash to damage the surface of the screws or nuts, by this the wrench width of the movable jaws adjusts to head size automatically and thus ensures a gentle use.
The movable jaw is coupled by means of the gear rack and the gear segment to the handle.
Schwartzkopff applied this invention in an improved form in 1863. But however he just could not profitably exploit his invention because its market strategy was not focused on small customers.
