English mathematician
As the representative of the first generation of English practical mechanics, Gregory pursued a balanced synthesis of empiricism and theory. Despite the use of higher mathematics (including the introduction of the differential and integral notation of Leibniz in England) and mechanical theories he tried to keep the low level of abstraction of his work. Important to him were practical results such as friction reduction, improved efficiency and creating various kinds of movement types. He turned the results obtained on different machines (mills, presses, pumps, water wheels, cranes, pile drivers, clocks, steam engines). He invented a method for the selection of the technical characteristics that are essential for a theory.
