1874 Paris, France Graduated from the Polytechnic School.
1884 - 1922 Established by Charles Lallemand: The zero leveling, that Lallemand called "Normal Zero" was based on the observation of the Marseille's tidal from February 1st, 1885 to January 1st, 1897. These observations have identified a zero corresponding to the 0.329 m wide tidal for the Fort Saint-Jean scale. It is therefore 71 mm below the "Bourdaloue zero".
1897 Invention of the tide gauge (historical monument). (We continue to accurately track the oscillations of the sea and an IGN surveyor continues to weekly wind up the mechanism and rate the sea-level measurements).
1897 Invention of the medimaremeter: The medimaremeter can mechanically filter tidal waves with a sensor communicating with the sea through a porous porcelain shell giving it a very long time constant.
1912 President of the French Association for the Advancement of Science.
1919 - 1933 He was president of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics.
