French inventor and gunsmith, he proved the superiority of the breech-loading weapons.
Antoine Alphonse Chassepot was a worker for the arms manufacturers of St. Thomas in Paris. In 1858, he became a civil servant and submitted to the French Ministry of War in 1863 a model of charger head, first with a percussion without cartridge unit. Later, he submitted a reproduction of a gun detonator Johann Nikolaus Dreyse with cartridge unit. It was only in 1866, after the success of the prussian gun with detonator that he has been able to prove the superiority of a gun breech loading. His rifle was presented as a weapon for the French infantry in the official designation of the rifle Model 1866.
Antoine Alphonse Chassepot also got the Ehrenlegion medal and 30,000 francs of earnings.
