Schottischer Ingenieur und Physiker; gilt als einer der Begründer der Thermodynamik
Rankine beschäftigte sich vor allem mit Wärmekraftmaschinen. Sein Ziel war die Steigerung von Leistung und Wirkungsgrad. Ihm gelang die Darstellung der in einer Dampfmaschine ablaufenden Vorgänge in einem Kreisprozess, der später nach ihm benannt wurde. Rankine führte den Begriff Energie in die Physik ein und schuf eine umfassende Theorie der Wärmekraftmaschinen. Er verfolgte ein Programm der Harmonisierung von Theorie und Praxis unter Betonung der experimentellen Forschung, wobei er sich u.a. mit Licht, Eisenbahnen, Bruchfestigkeit, Materialermüdung und Temperatur beschäftigte.
