Abstract Den ersten Entwurf dieses Werkes schrieb Béthencourt in den Jahren 1802-1805 in Madrid. Der Text wurde von Lanz zwischen 1805-1807 neu zusammengestellt. Schließlich arbeiteten Béthencourt und Lanz vier Monaten des Jahres 1808 gemeinsam in Paris daran und übergaben ihn im selben Jahr der "Ecole Polytechnique". Hachette passte das Manuskript dem von ihm entworfenen Lehrprogramm an der Ecole an und gab es noch 1808 zusammen mit einem eigenen Klassifikationsschema heraus. Die Arbeit kann als eine Synthese der gereiften Erfahrungen von Béthencourt und Lanz innerhalb des Lehrprogramms der "Ecole Polytechnique" und unter Begutachtung von Monge und Hachette betrachtet werden. Im Jahr 1819 erschien die erste Ausgabe ohne Beteiligung von Hachette.
