Abstract	Willis gestaltet sein Werk auf der Grundlage seiner Vorlesungen an der Universität Cambridge. Er beschreibt verschiedene elementare Mechanismen sowie deren Kombinationsmöglichkeiten. Sein Klassifizierungsschema beruht auf der Beziehung zwischen Eingangs- und Ausgangsbewegungen sowie -geschwindigkeiten. Sein Werk war eines der ersten Handbücher für den Maschinenbau und erreichte eine große Verbreitung. Es hatte Einfluß auf die Entwicklung der Kinematik und der Zahnradlehre. Im Jahre 1870 erschien eine umfangreichere zweite Ausgabe.
