Professor, Founder of Research Institutes
Luigi Gerardo Napolitano is an Italian Professor who founded important Research Institutes. He is among the best known professors of the faculty of Engineering of the University of Naples outside Italy. He has teached in several universities outside Italy (Berkeley, Sorbone, Poitiers). His research activity was particularly wide. In was Fullbright Student Scholar at the Polytecnic of Brooklyn under prof. Antonio Ferri’s direction, then he was President of the International Astronautical Federation, and then Principal Investigator during the experiment “Free convection in Low Gravity” on the Spacelab. Thank to this experiment, it was demonstrated, for the first time, the existence of the Marangoni Effect due to thermal gradients in a liquid bridge in absence of gravity. Later he was Principal Investigator of the experiment “Marangoni Flows” on the Spacelab that extended the preliminary resultas obtained during the mission in 1983.
He founded and was the first president of the consortium consortium university-company MARS (Microgravity Advanced Research and Support) Center and of the research institute CIRA (Italian Center fot the Aerospace researches).
The plasma wind tunnel Scirocco at the CIRA was named after him.
