Romanian University from Arad

Documents that prove the history of education in Transylvania and in Arad evince an admirable activism of the Arad’s intellectuals, with dramatic accents sometimes, to establish a University in this town. Preparandia (1812), Clerical Theological Institute (1822), Conservatory of Music (1833), academic projects of scholars such as: Bishop Ghenadie Raţ (in 1850), Ioan Popovici-Desseanu (in 1871), Vasile Goldiş (in 1906), Onisifor Ghibu (in 1915), Ion Montani (in 1924) anticipated the idea of higher education. Memories of September 18, 1940, of 11, 20 and 30 January 1945, of 19 August 1947 written by great personalities, show Arad’s intelligentsia and others the abiding faith that Arad is justified, by his brilliant history, to become an university town. And when, finally, an Institute of Agriculture with two faculties (Faculty of Animal Science and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine) was founded, it functioned only nine years. In 1972 was founded the Institute of engineers, university type institution that developed later in current University "Aurel Vlaicu".
The events of December 1989 have meant for residents of Arad also the expressing of new hopes in academically grounds. After petitions, rallies, admirable endeavor, citizen’s voice was heard. Government Decision no. 567 of 18 May 1990 stipulated the establishment of the Institute for Higher Education in Arad, based on the structure of the Institute of Engineers.
The University "Aurel Vlaicu" Arad establishing Act, as initial "Institute of Higher Education", was based on the Government Decision no. 567/18.05.1990, Ministerial Order no. 7751/1990.
