Stoppelli, Francesco (1917 - 1997)

Professor, Scientist in the field of the Mechanics.

Francesco STOPPELLI was an Italian Professor of Analytical Mechanics that played a fundamental role in the field of the mechanics both as scientist and as professor.
He started his scientific training at the Neapolitan Scool of Mathematics directed by the leading figures of prof. R. Caccioppoli and prof C. Miranda.
He was appointed Assistent Professor in 1948 and then Full Professor of Analytical Mechanics at the University of Napoles –“Federico II”.
His investigations had a great international esteem especially for what non linear elasticity and high speed rotor dynamics is concerned. Because of his scientific works, Professor Stoppelli was asked by the Royal Swedish Achademy of Science to propose a candidate for the 1968 Nobel Prize for Physics.
Professor Stoppelli is also remembered for his very high level teaching activity; the latter was essentially carried out at the Faculty of Engineering of University of Napoles –“Federico II”. Several generations of engineers learned from him the tools for the rigorous study of Mechanics and remember him with respect and gratitude.
