Boltzmann, Ludwig (1844 - 1906)
Austrian physicist and philosopher
The life work of Boltzmann was the reorganization of thermodynamics. He established with James Clerk Maxwell the Statistical Mechanics (Boltzmann statistics) and interpreted the entropy as a microscopic size.
Boltzmann was a supporter of the atomistic idea. He had many colleagues of his time as opponents, among them Wilhelm Ostwald and Max Planck. However, Planck took on his Planck's law back to the ideas of Boltzmann. The Stefan-Boltzmann law (the radiated power is proportional to the 4th power of the absolute temperature) is a special case of the Planck law.
