Romanian professor
When children from the village Borca (Neamt County) played by throwing wooden arrow over Bistrita River, did not thought that, years later, one of them will be a great scientist, whose monograph modulation frequency will be translated into several languages widely circulated, as Russian, French etc.. And even when the same children are trying to build themselves a wood plane, they had no idea that the same Gheorghe Cartianu will be the creator of premieres in Romanian Radio, as the first frequency modulated radio relay, designed and manufactured by Romanian specialists.
Born in Borca, Gheorghe Cartianu attended high school in Bacau, after graduation, the Electro-mechanics Department of the Polytechnic School of Bucharest, finished in 1933. In parallel, he followed the courses in mathematics at the Faculty of Sciences in Bucharest. But his health was fragile, a severe lung disease is declared, so he had to be treated seriously. His willingness will win the disease, and in 1934, he was assistant at the Polytechnic of Bucharest, to radio courses initiated by Prof. Tudor Tanasescu, and also to special mathematics, as an assistant of Professor Ernest Abason. It is remarkable that, although his poor health, he had no complain and worked assiduously all his life.
After the educational reform of 1948, Gheorghe Cartianu became head of the Radio communication Chair, the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications of the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest - Chair created that time- keeping on the job since 1952 and until 1977. That time he withdrew from school, but not from scientific life, he always remained present and active, until the last minute. He was a correspondent member of the Academy in 1964.
Scientist in the true sense of the word, Gh. Cartianu is the author of first significant, highly scientific studies, published in out country, not only in radio technique, but also in some important chapters of electricity. It is to be mentioned here, first of all, his studies of electrical circuit elements having a negative resistance, studies of equivalence between magnetic layers and electric currents, etc.
Professor Cartianu established the Romanian school of radio- and radio-communications, happily combining the theoretical and practical aspects. His studies extend to a wide area that includes frequency modulation, stable electric circuits, synthesis of linear circuits, reliability, communication theory, cybernetics. Thus he established an important criterion of stability, especially important theoretically in terms of practice. We remember that the first experimental radio broadcasts in metric waves, in our country, were realized with equipments with frequency modulation, the conception (1947-1950), designed and manufactured by Professor Gh. Cartianu.
He was the creator of the first experimental radio relay, frequency modulated, in metric wave (1952), dealing with avant-garde problems, such as radio wave propagation in mine galleries, continuous radio transmission of exact time, etc. His research led to a dispatching facility transport in mines, to watch installation in the Bucharest underground etc. For his work as an inventor, was awarded the gold medal at the international exhibition in Nuremberg (1967). But the main merit of Professor Gh Cartianu remains, undoubtedly, the creation of powerful radio and radio communication school. Opened to all problems, sensitive to his staff, carefully chosen and closely supervised, Gh Cartianu was a complete man, who said: "Not to pay attention to art, literature, because you're an engineer, is a great error. This transform yourself into a machine, you become an insensitive robot ".
