Romanian professor

"In the past - confessed in an interview the academician Ion S. Gheorghiu - I had to overcome great obstacles. And in many ways I was pleased to win”. Further on, the great engineer recalled the important works he has done, on the 40 generations of electromechanical and electrical engineers that he formed - not forgetting to point out that he owes most his parents in developing own personality, work and creative urge.
These are the words of Professor IS Gheorghiu, the Romanian school of electrical machinery maker, who founded and developed the first electric machine laboratory in our country, namely in Polytechnic School of Bucharest. Also he has the merit of being held in our country, starting in 1926, the first electric machines lecture and of being published firstly a manual of electric machines, issued in four volumes, monumental work, crowned by the State Prize. Throughout his life, Professor Gheorghiu IS happily joined his scientific research with the industrial and teaching work.
He was born in Bacău. he attended high school in Bucharest, being rated first in Baccalaureate in 1903. He succeeded the entrance examination at National School of Bridges and Highways in Bucharest - where among his masters were the Spiru Haret and Anghel Saligny – he graduated it in 1909 as an engineer, head of the class. In the same year he begun a period of specialization in electrical machines. Follow other years of study, when he was mainly concerned with railway electrification. Beginning in 1920, he became an academic, first at the Faculty of Science, University of Bucharest, and, in 1921, at the Polytechnic, where he worked until 1968.
His technical labor starts early in 1911, designing electrical installations in the port of Constanta, activity continued at various units in Bucharest. He participated in upgrading Grozavesti Filaret plant, in the extension of 5 kV network, outside the capital, etc. He completed basic studies for designing Dobreşti Hydroelectric Plant and put into service and operation of first line of 110 kV in the country, on the route Dobreşti-Bucharest-Târgovişte. He had an important role in the study and inventory of the country's hydropower resources, as in the scientific plan of electrification of Romania and in the development of electrical industry. Note that since 1912 he published the first study on the Romanian railway electrification, true example of clear technical insight.
Gheorghiu IS had developed a general unitary theory of alternating current electrical machines, with or without collector. In the important field of parallel operation of electrical power plants, he applied a method, that later became classical, method under the name of sole generator.
For all his creative activity, IS Gheorghiu was elected to the Academy (1951). He was Chairman of Technical Sciences section of this forum and vice president of the Academy. Also, he was, in the interwar period, leading member of the Romanian Institute for Energy (IRE), the Higher Technical Council, the Superior Council of Energy, and Chairman of the Automation Committee of the Academy. He was awarded with high distinctions, like Emeritus Scientist.
It remains to all who knew him as a distinguished teacher figure, linking knowledge of the classical theory of electric machines with great clarity of exposure, with eyes always staring at highlighting the essential, at possible applications of the theory presented.
