An important Basque engineer and entrepreneur. With his activities in the steel industry he enhanced the Basque economy and contributed to its technological development.
Victor Francisco Chávarri y Salazar was born in Portugalete, Biscay (Spain) on December 23th in 1854. He studied in Lieja (Belgium) Civil Engineering in Arts and Manufacturing and graduated in 1878. He built an important business network around the steel industry with which he enhanced the Basque economy. In 1882 he created La Vizcaya which later Altos Hornos de Vizcaya, an important steel factory, took part of. Victor Chávarri with Pablo de Alzola, gave a political thrust to the creation of an Industrial Engineering School. He died on March 29th in 1900 in Marseilles, France.
