Hughes, David Edward (1831 - 1900)

David Edward Hughes was a scientist and an inventor born in Gales, UK. He was the inventor of the crystal radio and the semiconductor rectifier diode. He also was the con-inventor of the microphone and the teleprinter.

David Edward Hughes was born in Wales on May 16th in 1831. Since very young he was a musicians because of his father’s influence. In 1840 the Hughes family moved to United States. In 1850 he moved to Kentucky where he worked as a Music Professor. He soon became interested on Telegraphic machines and started to work on them. In 1855 he patented the first teleprinter, In 1879 he invented a spark transmitter and receiver. In June 1880 he was named Fellow of the Royal Society of London and obtained a Royal Medal in 1885. Through all his life he received several awards for his research and three patents for his Telegraphic machines. He also encourage young engineers and scientist to follow their ambitions. He died on January 22nd in 1900.
