Juan Urrutia Zulueta was born in Amurrio, Spain in 1866. He was an engineer and entrepreneur with a major influence on the hydroelectric industry in Spain. He founded Hidroeléctrica Española and Ibérica (Nowadays Iberdrola).
Juan Urrutia Zulueta was born on November 14th in 1866 en Amurrio, Spain. In 1892 he began to study Engineering in Madrid and he graduated in 1896. He then worked for 4 years at the electric company Compañía Eléctrica de San Sebastián. He built a waterfall in the Oria river and he modernized the company’s installations and equipment to gain a competitive advantage against the coal industry. In 1901 he founded, with two business partners, a hydroelectric company named Hidroeléctrica Ibérica. This company achieved the longest transmission distance in Europe by that time. In 1907 founded Hidroeléctrica Española in Madrid. Subsequently, from 1908 to 1919, he founded several companies for the electricity distribution all over Spain and even Portugal. He died on July 16th in 1925 in Neguri, Spain.
