Ferdinando II di Borbone was a King who demonstrated great perceptivity for industrialisation and founded several factories. Under his reign (1856) the Kingdom of the Two Siciles was awarded as the third Country of the world for the industrialization during the World Universal Exposition at Paris. Among the main doings of this king in the field of the mechanics, the following should be remembered: - First Railway in Italy and first railway tunnel of the world. - The steelworks pole at Mongiana. These plants plants were very advanced for those ages, in fact, many engineers were sent to Mongiana from foreign nations to study its manufacturing process. Sill in 1862 the steel produced at the Steelworks of Mongiana was awarded for its quality at the Industrial Exposition of London. - The mechanical workshops of Pietrarsa, first and larger mechanical heavy industry of Italy. At Pietrarsa were built, among other things, the first railway locos and the first marine propulsion plants of Italy.
