LEMARE, Pierre-Alexandre (1766 - 1835)

Linguist, politician and inventor of the nineteenth century.

He comes from a farming family in the Haut-Jura area, descendant of mainmortables serfs of the Abbey of Saint-Claude, his father is a lumberjack. He is a small illiterate peasant until the age of 12 years. In 1778, the village priest, Pierre-Joseph Gavel, notes his intelligence and teaches him Latin. In February 1791, he was nominated professor of rhetoric at the college of St. Claude and was ordained priest in April. Early 1794, he became president of the departmental administration of Jura. In the downfall of Robespierre in 1794, he took refuge in Paris, accused of involvement in the Terror. He was arrested, imprisoned in Salins, he escaped July 31, 1795 and took refuge in Switzerland. We find him early 1796 Mayor of the town of Grande-Rivière and new president of the central administration of the department of Jura. In 1801 Lemare is in Paris where he taught grammar at the Athenaeum of Arts. When the conspiracy was discovered in 1808, Lemare fled to Austria, he is escorted to the border and took refuge under the name Jacquet in Montpellier where he began studying medicine, he is named major-surgeon in 1811 of the Great Army that he follows to Moscow and the Russian retreat. In May 1814, he was back in France and rallied to Louis XVIII. during the Hundred Days, Lemare becomes "King's Commissioner" and the Abbot Lafon launch propaganda hostile to Napoleon in the Jura and the Doubs, including to commanders place, generals Lecourbe Marulaz in Belfort and Besançon. He will get no recognition while the new power is set. In 1815, he defended his medical thesis entitled "The possible for the health" at the Faculty of Paris. Lemare focuses on applications of the steam discoveries. In 1820, he patent the "pot autoclave", then in 1825, he patent his "Caléfacteur", which is actually the first pressure cooker that meets a real commercial success. In 1833, this is a patent for his "Calorilame" domestic heating equipment. In 1834 it's a new patent for the "Oven heater" that will equip the first industrial bakery. He was not only a politician who loved freedom and justice, he wrote against the death penalty, but it was also a great linguist and inventor.
