French engineer and physicist.

André-Eugène Blondel is the inventor of the electromechanical oscillograph and a system of photometric units of measurement. He was employed as an engineer by the Lighthouses and Beacons Service until he retired in 1927 as its general first class inspector. He became a professor of electrotechnology at the School of Bridges and Highways and the School of Mines in Paris. Very early in his career he suffered immobility due to a paralysis of his legs, which confined him to his room for 27 years, but he never stopped working. In 1893 André Blondel sought to solve the problem of integral synchronization, using the theory proposed by Cornu. He determined the conditions under which the curve traced by a high-speed recording instrument would follow as closely as possible the actual variations of the physical phenomenon being studied. This led him to invent the bifilar and soft iron oscillographs. These instruments won the grand prize at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904. They were more powerful than the classical stroboscope, invented in 1891. They remained the best way to record high-speed electrical phenomena for more than 40 years when they were replaced by the cathode ray oscilloscope. They paved the way for a greater understanding of the behavior of alternating current.

1893	Paris	Titularisation dans ses fonctions avec le titre d’Inspecteur Général des Ponts et Chaussées.
1893	Paris	Professeur suppléant du cours d'électricité industrielle.
1893 - 1910	Paris	Professeur d'électricité appliqué à l'École des Ponts et Chaussées.
1894	Paris	Il a proposé la lumière et d'autres nouvelles unités de mesure pour une utilisation en photométrie, fondé sur le mètre et la bougie Violle.
1898	Paris	Il reçoit la médaille de l'Institut Franklin
1904	Paris	Ses instruments ont remporté le grand prix du Saint- Exposition Louis.
1908	La Rochelle	Il est nommé Ingénieur en Chef et expérimente un radiophare permettant aux navires de se repérer malgré la brume.
1910	Brésil	Consultant pour le chemin de fer électrique de Victoria à Minas.
1910 - 1927	La Rochelle	Ingénieur par les Phares et Balises de service comme stagiaire pendant 38 ans (publication de 250 articles). Développement des radiophares.
1911	Brest	Création des quatre premiers radio-phares et mis en service à l'entrée du port de Brest en juin.
1913	Paris	Il est élu membre de l'Académie des sciences.
1919		Cesse toute activité pour raisons de santé.
1927		Départ à la retraite.
1927		Création de la médaille André Blondel par la SEE pour perpétuer le souvenir de ce grand scientifique.
1928		Il prend la direction de l'Encyclopédie d'électricité industrielle en 20 volumes chez l'éditeur Baillère.
1929		Il reçoit le prix Montefiore et le prix de Lord Kelvin.
1932		Correspondant de l'Académie des sciences de Saint-Pétersbourg.
1937		Il reçoit la médaille Faraday.
1937		Il reçoit la médaille Gustave Trasenster de la Société Belge d'Électricité.
