LENOIR, Etienne (1822 - 1900)

Belgian engineer and inventor who designed the first commercially successful internal-combustion engine.

By the early 1850s he had immigrated to France, taking up residence in Paris, where he developed an interest in electroplating. His interest in the subject led him to make electrical inventions including an improved electric telegraph. Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir produced the first practical internal combustion engine and an automobile by which it was powered. His engine consisted of a single cylinder with a storage battery (accumulator) for the electric ignition system. Its two-stroke cycle was operated by slide valves, and the engine was fuelled by coal gas. In 1863, Lenoir's engine was commercialized in sufficient quantities to be considered a success, a first for the internal combustion engine.

1859		Réalisation du premier moteur à combustion interne utilisable ; c’était un moteur à deux temps avec pour carburant du gaz de houille.
1859		Dépôt d'un brevet : son moteur à gaz et à air dilaté », un moteur à combustion interne à deux temps.
1860		Fabrication de son moteur à gaz et à air dilaté en 400 exemplaires qui servirent notamment pour le premier bateau à moteur en 1861 sur la Seine. Ce moteur consommait 18 litres de mélange gazeux pour développer une puissance de deux chevaux.
1870		Obtention de la nationalité française pour services exceptionnels rendus à la France lors du siège de Paris.
1876		Dépôt d'un brevet : la bougie d'allumage pour moteur en 1876
1883		Réalisation du moteur à quatre temps en se basant sur le principe du cycle de Beau de Rochas. Essai de son automobile avec moteur à gaz parcourant 9 kilomètres de Paris à Joinville-le-Pont en trois heures.
