French inventor and industrialist, pioneer of agricultural machinery.
Célestin Gerard inventor of the famous "VIERZON" tractor, well known in all peasant families. Son of farmers, he opened a workshop in Vierzon in front of the station in 1847. The first agricultural and mechanical workshop opened in October 15, 1848. In 1866 he built the first mobile harvester in France and the first steam locomobile. And he created the French Society of Vierzon (SFV). In 1879, without any successor, he sold his factory to Lucien Arbelqui who created the SFMAI itself sold to Case IH in 1959. Early in the twentieth century, Vierzon has four factories manufacturing equipment employing up to 1,500 people depending the seasons.
