Military engineer and French inventor. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 he started work on the design of airships at the French army aeronautical department.

After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 he started work on the design of airships at the French army aeronautical department. Together with Arthur C. Krebs and his brother Paul, in 1884 he constructed La France, which made its maiden flight on 9 August 1884 at Chalais Meudon, making a 23 minute circular flight. This was the first time that a flying machine returned to the place of take-off. It was later exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle (1889).He also proposed a now widely used system of preferred numbers that was later named after him and became international standard ISO 3. Colonel Renard invented the Renard Road Train first developed by Darracq and displayed by them in 1903 later developed in England by Daimler. Depressed by the French governments's refusal to fund his experiments and the rejection of his candidacy for membership of the French Academy of Sciences he committed suicide in April 1905.

1877	Chalais-Meudon	Fonde l'Établissement central de l'aérostation militaire qui devient le premier laboratoire d'essais aéronautiques au monde.
1884		Construction et mise au point du dirigeable « La France » dans un hangar (le Hangar Y) du ministère de tutelle l'établissement.
09.08.1884	Villacoublay	Réalisation de ce dirigeable avec une hélice motorisée par moteur électrique alimenté par pile. Premier vol en circuit fermé au monde. Il a duré 23 minutes pour un parcours de 8 km (avec le Capitaine Krebs).
1885		Campagne d'essais concluants du dirigeable rentrant à son point de départ cinq fois sur sept.
08.04.1886		Publications: Société de secours des amis des sciences. Conférence sur la navigation aérienne, faite par M. commandant Ch. Renard, dans la séance publique annuelle.
1890		Le moulinet dynamométriques.
06.03.1901		Patent n° US685174: wheel for road vehicles.
1902		Invention d'un train-automobile à propulsion continue « train routier à traction continue » et qui conservera le nom de « train Renard ».
1904		Publications: Notice sur les travaux scientifiques de M. Ch. Renard
07.01.1904		Patent n° US775765: vehicule train.
27.06.1904		Patent n° US784432: steam generator.
26.11.1904		Patent n° US804043: steam generator.

1908		Un dirigeable militaire est baptisé Colonel Renard.
1911		Une rue porte son nom à Paris. Cette rue a été renommée rue des Colonels-Renard en 1939, après la mort de son frère Paul.
1912		Création de la base aérienne 272 à Saint-Cyr-l'École (aujourd'hui disparue) sous le nom de caserne Charles Renard.
