MURDOCH was born in Ayrshire and spent almost all his life in the employment of Boulton and Watt's firm at Soho. For many years he represented them in Cornwall, where they had sold many pumping-engines. Beginning in 1777, MURDOCH collaborated with J. Watt and helped improve the steam engine. He invented a steam engine with an oscillating cylinder, a stone-drilling machine, and a slide valve. In 1792 he achieved dry distillation of coal, and in 1803 he used the gas obtained by distillation to provide lighting for a factory in Soho. He was also interested in the possibility of steam locomotion, though his employers were far from encouraging, and he experimented with compressed air and steam guns.

Dépôt d'un brevet n°2340 : (Tiroir) méthode de conduite des machines pour cylindres de forage, un procédé de coulage cylindres chemisés d'un seul tenant, et une «tubulure de vidange coulissant,» qui a été par la suite modifié et est devenu le temps de tiroir, éventuellement le déplacement de l'engin compliqué de moteurs précédents Watt. Une forme particulière de moteur rotatif est également décrit dans le cahier des charges.

Conception de la plus ancienne forme de moteur indépendant ou autonome, adaptée à reposer sur le sol sans nécessiter le soutien des murs d'un bâtiment. Il a été appelé un «moteur coudé» (machine à vapeur).
Mise au point d'un pistolet à vapeur, qui a été jugé à Soho. L'invention du «ciment de fer», qui se compose d'un mélange de limaille de sel ammoniac et de fer, largement utilisés par les ingénieurs à ce jour.
