John Elder was a Scottish marine engineer and shipbuilder. He followed his father in constructing marine steamengines and in 1854 established the compound engineas its most efficient form, which made the use ofsteamships more competitive than sail. He took outnumerous patents and expanded the business toemploy thousands of workers.
