Spanish engineer, intellectual, political and inventor.

Narciso Monturiol was a Spanish engineer, intellectual, political and inventor, famous for inventing the first submarine driven with a combustion engine. In 1858 he built a submarine he called Ictíneo that after some failed test, was able to dive 20 meters, navigate submerged for more than two hours and return to the surface. The second Ictíneo was launched to sea in October 2, 1864 in the presence of high military bodies. He was a larger submarine and with capacity for a crew of 20 men. It was intended as a war submarine, but these trials did not call the attention of the Government, so that the project was abandoned.
Narciso Monturiol continued working as an engineer and inventor and made many other inventions, among which its machine to make cigarettes and a machine for printing the notebooks of lined paper used by school children and students.
