Demetrio I di Macedonia detto Poliorcete (337 BC - 283 BC)

Inventor, strategist

Demetrius I of Macedon, called Poliorcetes was one of the best generals of those ages but must be remembered also as a brilliant mechanical engineer because he built remarkable war machines. His nickname “Poliorcetes”, in fact, means “besieger” (of towns) and was given to him because of the many successful sieges that he completed. Very probably those victories were obtained also thanks to the prodigious war machines that he was able to build. Among those we must remember, a huge ram that needed about 1000 men to be operated and most of all gigantic siege towers called “helepolis” that means “tacker of cities”; the latter represented an arrival point in the war machine mechanics of those ages.
